Edison Electric Company Donates Product and Labor for Incredible Day of Volunteer Service at The Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, MD – Mike Thompson, Owner and President of Edison Electric Co., Inc., has been a longtime supporter of the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation.  Mike first became involved with the Foundation twenty years ago through a family connection.  He has become more and more involved with the charity and he recently joined the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Mike became aware that Foundation’s Children’s House at Johns Hopkins could greatly reduce operating costs with energy efficiency upgrades.  Mike approached Believe In Tomorrow’s founder, Brian Morrison, with an ambitious proposal.

Together, Mike and Brian spent weeks planning for the installation of energy-efficient solutions.  Mike and his team, made up of 60 volunteers, would spend two days upgrading and installing over 500 new fixtures, exhaust fans, occupancy sensors, outlets and switches.  He and his team would coordinate all the logistics, from securing the cherry picker for the outside work, to lining up meals for the volunteers so that they could operate at maximum productivity.  Overall the donated labor and materials is estimated to be more than $100,000.

The Children’s House at Johns Hopkins is a pediatric hospital housing facility located in Baltimore, Maryland.  It provides a “home away from home” for pediatric patients and their families.  The facility is always at full occupancy which added a layer of complexity during the planning process to minimize family displacement and inconvenience. Families staying at The Children’s House travel from anywhere within the Unites States and from over 80 countries worldwide as they seek specialized treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital for their child’s medical conditions.  Keeping the specific needs of the critically ill children and their families foremost in their minds, a two-day installation was scheduled to begin.

The Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year.  During this past quarter century, the Children’s House has provided over 900,000 overnight stays to families whose children are undergoing treatment at the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Families arrive often not knowing how long they will live at The Children’s House, and stays range from a single night to over one year in length.

The primary goal of The Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation is to keep families together during their child’s medical crisis by providing hospital and respite housing services. These exclusive programs are designed to bring comfort, joy and hope to children and their families, enabling them to renew their spirits both mentally and physically.
