Electrician Discovers Better Way to Install Linear Lights in Concrete Ceilings

Exclusive 4” Round Ring Transitions to 1-Gang Opening

For contractors installing linear light fixtures in concrete ceilings (think: parking garages), it can be hard to find octagon cover plates off-the-shelf that have small enough openings… look aesthetically pleasing… and don’t require field modification.

Luckily, Orbit is the only game in town that carries Steel 4” Round Covers that transition to a 1-Gang opening!

As with most Orbit exclusives, these rings were developed based on contractor feedback from the field. One EC firm in Southern California reported a scenario in an underground parking garage. They were installing thin linear strip lights, mounted to octagonal concrete boxes embedded in the slab.

Standard octagonal covers offered only up to 3/4” knockouts, which did not meet AHJ requirements to wire light fixtures. The contractor would need to enlarge the opening and insert bushings to meet requirements.

The other option was a 4” round cover with a 2-3/4” O.C. opening. However, the contractor reported these rings left open “gaps” that were unsightly and risked failing inspection.

In response, Orbit developed 4” Round to 1-Gang Rings, available in Flat (4R1000) and 5/8” raised (4R1058) configurations. Both rings are made of 16-gauge steel, measure 4-1/2” in diameter (outside), and come in standard packages of 50 each. Key hole pattern and slots allow for effortless attachment to octagonal concrete boxes. Rings are ETL Listed. Now, contractors installing linear light fixtures in concrete ceilings have an off-the-shelf alternative to standard concrete box covers!
