ZGS and Thorn get the Community of Nenzing Fit for the Future
The Nenzing community uses R2L2 LED street lighting from Thorn for modern local lighting and the InCity system for easy control. The lighting control system also automatically evaluates the data, making it much easier to monitor the lighting.

DORNBIRN, AUSTRIA – The town of Nenzing in Vorarlberg has taken a big step towards the future with renewed street lighting and the intelligent InCity lighting management system. Zumtobel Group Services consulted and supported the complete development and implementation of the smart control system for the 6000 inhabitants city.               Thorn and ZGS supported Nenzing in their progressive approach. The comprehensive package supplied includes: Modern LED-street luminaires R2L2 and the innovative InCity lighting control system. The cooperation of both brands brings the advantage of one ready-to-use system from one point of contact.               The lighting control system InCity enables Nenzing to precisely adapt the lighting levels of the 550 R2L2 street lights according to the actual lighting needs. What that means in reality: In areas where only limited lighting is needed at night, for example in quiet residential areas, the lighting control system can dim the street lights down to 20%. This allows the residents a restful sleep. When the traffic is heavy, for example during rush hour, time controls raise the lighting level, providing greater safety. But Nenzing is looking towards the future too. In some districts, motion sensors will be installed, to control the lighting as needed: If no movement is detected for a long time, InCity will dim the lighting levels on the relevant luminaires. The use of artificial light throughout the night/day cycle that adapts to specific situations saves valuable energy, avoids light pollution and offers more comfort for residents.

Florian Kasseroler, Mayor of the market town of Nenzing is delighted: ”We’re proud that our town is taking on such a pioneering role as a Smart City“. InCity from Zumtobel Group Services offers us the right amount of light at the right time and in the right place. This saves us up to 80% energy and increases our residents’ sense of wellbeing. In addition the modern Thorn R2L2 LED street lights fit perfectly into our urban landscape. “

Flexible lighting solutions are becoming increasingly important in cities. They allow people in positions of responsibility to respond to the lifestyles of citizens and changes in urban infrastructure. The InCity lighting control system from ZGS fully meets these requirements and therefore also convinced the local council in Nenzing as a future-proof solution. InCity not only ensures the permanent control of the luminaires. The system also logs around the clock activities of street lights, such as the energy consumption. Andit automatically analyses the collected data. The data can be accessed by the responsible technician via the Internet. Thanks to the current status reports and automatic error messages, maintenance interventions can now be better planned.

InCity uses wireless communication technologies: A 2.4 Gigahertz secure wireless connection links the luminaires with each other and with the gateway. If a fault occurs, the luminaires can operate in stand-alone mode and are programmed to continue to control the lighting safely and reliably. Open-ended software logs and interfaces allow InCity to exchange data with other smart systems such as parking or traffic control systems, and adapt the lighting more precisely to any given situation.

The R2L2 street lights from Thorn impressed the local council particularly with their quality, efficiency and precise lighting control without stray light losses. The luminaires were already fitted with the corresponding InCity component at the factory, which simplified the installation on site.  The installation was carried out by E-Werke Frastanz technicians after receiving a training from the Zumtobel Group Services Team.
