Show Me the Data: Does LED Lighting Influence Roadway Safety? FREE WEBINAR

July 2, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT
July 2, 2020 @  12:00 PM Eastern Time

PRESENTERS: Bruce Kinzey and Jason Tuenge, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Data supporting driving safety effects from substituting the broad-based spectrums of LEDs in roadway lighting for incumbent sodium or mercury vapor luminaires are limited. While a few related studies have been conducted under controlled conditions, they differ significantly from actual driving situations that involve complex combinations of driver distractions, environmental and road conditions, stress levels, and other random variables. This webinar will share preliminary findings from a new PNNL field study of roadway crash statistics, investigating whether converting to energy-efficient LED roadway lighting with some blue content influences driving safety. PNNL is partnering with more than 60 municipalities in the Philadelphia region on this project, along with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.

Webinar participants are eligible for one (1) IES Continuing Education Unit (CEU).
