In this presentation we will discuss the recent developments in technology that have made it possible for Hollywood to create physically plausible visuals, and how we as lighting designers can leverage this technology to improve our calculation and rendering workflows.

Have you ever wondered how Hollywood films create such realistic scenes with computer graphics? In many cases, it’s because they use virtual materials and lights that obey the laws of physics! If Hollywood artists can accurately simulate the interaction between light sources and materials, why aren’t lighting designers doing the same? In this presentation we will discuss the recent developments in technology that have made it possible for Hollywood to create physically plausible visuals, and how we as lighting designers can leverage this technology to improve our calculation and rendering workflows. Topics covered include:

  • Physically accurate light propagation
  • Physically accurate material properties
  • Drastically decreasing render times
  • Creating multiple scenes from a single render
  • Accurate daylight simulation
  • Environmental lighting using project photography
