How it Feels to be a 30 Under 30 Winner: Harvey Canning

The renowned 30 under 30 awards, hosted by eFIXX and proudly sponsored by Luceco
Group, is an awards programme where applicants are nominated for their significant contribution
to the electrical contracting industry. Winners prove that they are willing to go above and beyond
in delivering outstanding service and results. The 30 under 30 awards are now in their second
year of recognizing up-and-coming talent within the industry.
One of the 30 under 30 winners, Harvey Canning, from Canning Electrical Services,
shares how it feels to be recognized as a winner. He stated: “I’m absolutely honored to have been
selected as one of this year’s 30 under 30 winners. As a young person who has been in the trade
for a relatively short period, it’s an incredible feeling to have been recognized in this way.”
He shares his journey: “My route into the industry is not the usual journey many take. It
started when I studied engineering at college, gaining a thorough understanding of electrical
principles and theories. Following this, I started an apprenticeship in engineering maintenance in
the subsea fibre cable industry. I was responsible for maintaining, as well as developing and
building various equipment, and this is where I developed a lot of my practical skills.
Unfortunately, due to issues within the company, I did not achieve the NVQ that should have
come with the apprenticeship, so I spoke to the NICEIC to find out what the qualification
requirements were, for me to start working as an electrician domestically. In November 2020 I
undertook the 18th edition exams, fundamental testing and inspection and other training, and
registered with the NICEIC as a domestic installer and started the next stage of my journey.
“Since then I have continued to develop my skills and knowledge, passing the City and
Guilds 2391-52 and Electric Vehicle Charging courses. I am currently in the early stages of
undertaking my NVQ in order to obtain my JIB Gold Card and continue to further my journey
within the industry.”
He adds that he believes his unique journey is what set him apart from the other
candidates: “I think having not had a traditional route into the industry and always trying to
improve my skill and knowledge base to be as good as I can be, is what sets me apart.”
When asked what advice he would give to the next generation trying to progress within
the electrical contractor industry, Harvey stated: “Never ever be afraid to ask questions; the only
stupid questions are the ones that are never asked. Understanding why things are done a certain
way will give you a deeper understanding and allow you to overcome challenges more easily.”
Luceco Group have played a key role in the success of the awards, bringing together the
credibility of a respected manufacturer with the reach and content capabilities of media outlet
eFIXX.
Harvey comments on the significant benefits of Luceco Group supporting the
programme: “I think Luceco Group’s support of the programme helps promote the program as
they are a well-known manufacturer, and their support shows that large manufacturers are keen
to support the younger generation of electricians in the industry. I have used and loved some of
Luceco Group’s work light range even before the awards, and plan to replace one of the lights I
lost on a job recently! I hope through the awards I can gain a better knowledge of Luceco
Group’s product ranges and hope to try more of the products out.”
He also shares what he is most looking forward to at the Luceco Group hosted winner’s
event in September: “I’m looking forward to meeting the other winners and hope to develop
working relationships with some of the other candidates. I am also excited to nurture a
relationship with Luceco Group and learn more about their products!”
